Whenever I log in to Yahoo! Mail, there is a selection of the day’s “Top Stories” in headline form. They’re clearly designed to be intriguing ((Ultimately so that they can increase their ad revenue.)) and they sometimes make me laugh:
I don’t know why I found that funny. Maybe it was the presence of “balls” and “paedophile” in the same sentence.
This one, however, just struck me as being stupid:
It says that people can now have an operation which will give them better than 20/20 vision, which they call “HD vision”. Leaving aside the inapplicability of the term “HD” to eyes, it follows that if people can fully appreciate HD videos (which I think we can), then we already have better than HD vision!
It’s just silly.
As much as the article and headline are ridiculous the possibilities it raises are interesting. Imagine being able to zoom using your eyes or to have thermal/night vision without the use of external tools. Yes, I know it’s a large leap going from “better than 20/20” vision to enhancing what our eyes are capable of, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing something along those lines happening in our lifetimes among other bionic enhancements to the human body.
Unless the world goes into chaos due to a lack of water and food resources…
I’d love to have mega-everything, and I too am sure it won’t be long before we’re all so enhanced.
…And have you been watching Horizon again? I watched it last night.
I also want a USB port in my head so I can back up my ideas and memories.
I’ve no idea if I was watching Horizon or not, but I think I was. It was quite eye opening. While I’m not sure if things really are, or really are going to be, that bad, it did make me think about how we’re living and how wasteful we seem to be as a race right now. It’s quite shocking.
Also, agreed on the USB port (although I’d prefer wireless scraping of my data). I think that’s one of the great flaws of human memory at the moment; it’s so imperfect and things are more often than not forgotten.
Unfortunately I can see progress being hampered by conservative thinkers who believe we shouldn’t be tampering with the human body; just look at stem cell research in the US as an example. I see it as the next stage of evolution for humans since we’ve more or less beaten organic evolution thanks to medical and social advances.
I’m going to write about that Horizon because I think about that sort of thing a lot.
Goddamn liberals.
