Direct – the thing/person directly affected by the verb
- I see him
- Je le vois

Indirect – the sentence can be ‘unpacked’ to include a ‘to’ or a ‘for’
- He gives her flowers
- Il lui donne les fleurs
- He bought them for her
- Il les lui a acheté
- She goes to see her parents
- Elle va voir ses parents
- She gives them the flowers
- Elle leur donne les fleurs
